Vice Chairperson and Members of the European Parliament (EP)-Taiwan Friendship Group to Visit Taiwan
At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Hon. Laima Liucija Andrikiené, Vice Chairperson of the European Parliament (EP)-Taiwan Friendship Group and Vice Chairperson of the EP’s Subcommittee on Human Rights, will lead a nine-member delegation to visit Taiwan from March 28 to April 1, 2010.
The delegation consists of three other Members of the European Parliament: from Kingdom of The Netherlands, Hon. Bastiaan Belder; from Italy, Hon. Mario Mauro and Hon. Salvatore Iacolino.
This trip aims at deepening delegation members'comprehensive understanding of Taiwan’s recent political and economic developments. The members will meet with government officials to exchange views on topics such as cross-strait relations, and Taiwan-Europe relations. During their stay, the members will have an audience with President Ma Ying-jeou and President of the Legislative Yuan Wang Jin-pyng. They will also call on Minister of National Defense Kao Hua-chu, Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council Lai Shin-yuan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Shen Lyushun, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Liang Kuo-shin, as well as political party leaders and Mr. Guy Ledoux, Director of the European Economic and Trade Office. In addition, the delegation will visit the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101 building, the Lin Family Mansion and Garden, among other cultural and economic establishments.
This trip marks Vice Chairperson Andrikiené’s third visit to Taiwan. She has been elected to the European Parliament since 2004 and assumed as vice chairperson of the EP-Taiwan Friendship Group on September 1, 2009. Previously, she served as the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as Member of the Lithuanian Parliament. Hon. Andrikiené and members have maintained cordial relations with the Taipei Representative Office in the European Union and Belgium; over the years, they have strongly supported Taiwan's participation in UN specialized agencies and Schengen visa-waiver treatment for the Republic of China (Taiwan) passport holders,among other issues.
Other members of the delegation include Hon. Andrikiené’s political advisor, Mr. Rokas Grajauskas and assistant, Mr. Francisco Torres; Hon Belder’s political advisor, Mr. Walter van Luik; Hon. Mauro’s assistant, Ms. Vittoria Venezia and Hon. Iacolino’s assistant, Mr. Luciano Gaudio.
